Back Pain
Over more than a decade of practice, we’ve developed a wide range of clinical interests. Here we are taking a deeper look at back pain, for other conditions see here.
Back pain is a very common condition that can affect people of all ages and backgrounds. Affecting the 60% worldwide adult population at some point in their lifetime, it refers to any discomfort or sensation of pain felt in the back, ranging from mild discomfort to debilitating agony. There are four main areas (neck, mid-back, lower back, and sacral), each with its own characteristics and ways of how we are using them.
The lumbosacral spine is an amazing part of our body, it connects the trunk (upper body) to the hips (lower body) and is key in our daily lives. It helps resolve loads and shocks, supports every movement we do with our arms and legs, allows a great range of movements and at the same time provides a huge amount of stability.
Symptoms of back pain can vary among individuals and may include:
Dull, aching sensation in the lower, middle, or upper back.
Sharp, shooting pain that radiates down the legs (sciatica) or arms.
Stiffness or limited range of motion in the spine.
Muscle spasms or cramping in the back muscles.
Difficulty standing up straight or walking comfortably.
The symptoms typically last for a short duration, often resulting from sudden injury, strain, or trauma. Sometimes back pain can persist for longer periods, usually beyond three months.
Causes Back pain can arise from numerous factors, including:
Muscle strain or sprain due to overuse, poor posture, or sudden movements.
Prolonged sitting, standing, or lifting with improper posture.
Traumatic incidents such as falls, accidents, or sports injuries.
Inflammatory reaction due to overloading joints between each vertebrae.
Bulging of intervertebral discs that irritates or compresses nearby nerves.
Structural issues like scoliosis (abnormal curvature of the spine) or kyphosis (excessive rounding of the upper back).
Degenerative conditions such as osteoarthritis, spinal stenosis, or degenerative disc disease.
Underlying health issues like fibromyalgia, osteoporosis, or infections can manifest as back pain.
Pain originating from other areas of the body (kidneys or abdominal organs) that radiates to the back.
