Post-Surgery Conditions

Over more than a decade of practice, we’ve developed a wide range of clinical interests. Here we are taking a deeper look at the post-surgery conditions, for other conditions see here.

Post-surgery conditions refer to the various physical, physiological, and psychological changes that may occur following a surgical procedure. These conditions can vary widely depending on the type of surgery, specific anatomical structures involved, and individual factors such as overall health, age, and pre-existing medical conditions.

At Complement we work closely with orthopaedic surgeons and other specialist consultants to follow post-surgery rehabilitation programs for those patients who sustained any medical procedures such as spine surgeries, knee surgeries, meniscus repair, joint fusions, tendons repair, total/partial replacements at the hip, shoulder surgeries, or other interventions (e.g. arthroscopies and corticosteroid injections).

Symptoms

  • Following musculoskeletal surgery, it's common to experience pain and swelling in the affected area. This can result from tissue trauma, inflammation, or nerve irritation associated with the surgical procedure.

  • Surgery can temporarily limit joint mobility and flexibility, leading to stiffness and difficulty moving the affected limb or joint.

  • Prolonged immobilisation or disuse of muscles after surgery can lead to muscle weakness and atrophy.

  • Surgical incisions can result in the formation of scar tissue, which may restrict movement and contribute to stiffness and discomfort.

  • Some surgical procedures, particularly those involving ligament repair or reconstruction, may temporarily affect joint stability.

  • Surgery near nerves or neural structures can sometimes result in nerve compression or irritation, leading to symptoms such as numbness, tingling, or weakness in the affected area.

  • Depending on the nature of the surgery and the extent of tissue damage, individuals may experience temporary or permanent functional limitations in activities of daily living or sports-related activities.

  • Surgery can have psychological effects such as anxiety, depression, or emotional distress.

How we can help with your post-surgery conditions

We offer a comprehensive approach that integrates various therapies and disciplines to address the diverse needs of our patients. Here's an overview of what we do to help with effective relief and management of your shoulder pain:

Personalised Evaluation We understand that every individual's experience is unique. That's why our team of specialists conducts thorough initial assessment to identify underlying causes, contributing factors, and specific needs of each patient. We conduct a thorough assessment to understand the individual's surgical history, current symptoms, and functional limitations.

Pre-surgery rehabilitation We can provide you with pre-operative programs to increase the benefits of final outcomes.

Personalised Treatment Plan Based on initial evaluation, our therapists develop a personalised treatment plan that may include physiotherapy, osteopathy and other rehabilitation exercises.

Pain Management We provide interventions to manage post-surgery pain and discomfort, such as manual therapy, modalities, and pain-relieving techniques.

Functional Restoration Our rehabilitation programs aim to restore mobility, strength, and function in the affected area through targeted exercises and hands-on techniques.

Scar Management We offer scar management techniques to minimise scar tissue formation, improve scar mobility, and optimise wound healing.

Education and Support We provide education on post-surgery care, activity modification, and self-management strategies to empower individuals in their recovery process.

Progress Monitoring We closely monitor progress throughout the rehabilitation process and adjust the treatment plan as needed to ensure optimal outcomes.

Collaboration with Healthcare Providers We collaborate with the individual's surgical team and other healthcare providers to ensure coordinated care and facilitate a seamless transition from surgery to rehabilitation.

Overall, our goal is to support individuals in their recovery journey, minimise complications, and maximise functional outcomes following surgery.
