Neck Pain
Over more than a decade of practice, we’ve developed a wide range of clinical interests. Here we are taking a deeper look at neck pain, for other conditions see here.
Neck pain is a common condition characterised by discomfort, stiffness, or soreness in the cervical spine region, more precisely the vertebrae between the base of the skull and the upper torso.
Symptoms of neck pain comprehend:
Dull, aching sensation in the neck.
Sharp, shooting pain that may radiate into the shoulders, arms, or hands.
Stiffness or limited range of motion in the neck.
Headaches, especially originating from the base of the skull.
Numbness, tingling, or weakness in the arms or hands, indicating possible nerve involvement.
Symptoms typically last for a short duration, often resulting from sudden injury, strain, or trauma, such as whiplash from a car accident or muscle strain from poor posture. Sometimes symptoms persist for longer periods, usually beyond three months.
Causes It can be caused by various factors, including degenerative conditions like cervical spondylosis, herniated discs, or ongoing stress on the cervical spine.
Muscles and ligaments strain due to overuse, poor posture, or sudden movements.
Facet joint pain in the neck (aka cervical facet syndrome) typically presents as a dull, aching sensation in the back of the neck, often accompanied by stiffness and reduced range of motion. This pain may radiate into the shoulders, upper back, or arms.
Degenerative conditions such as osteoarthritis, cervical spondylosis, or degenerative disc disease.
The bulging of intervertebral discs can compress nearby nerves, leading to neck pain and sometimes radiating symptoms to arms/chest.
Traumatic incidents such as falls, sports injuries, or repetitive motion injuries can result in neck pain.
