Shoulder Pain

Over more than a decade of practice, we’ve developed a wide range of clinical interests. Here we are taking a deeper look at shoulder pain, for other conditions see here.

Shoulder pain is a common condition characterised by discomfort, stiffness, or soreness in the shoulder joint or surrounding muscles and tissues. It can significantly impact daily activities, such as reaching, lifting, or carrying objects, and may be accompanied by other symptoms such as limited range of motion, weakness, or swelling. Effective management of shoulder pain often involves a combination of therapies, exercises, and lifestyle modifications tailored to address the underlying cause and alleviate symptoms.

Symptoms The symptoms of shoulder pain can vary depending on the underlying cause and severity of the condition. However, common symptoms associated with shoulder pain may include:

  • Discomfort or soreness in the shoulder joint or surrounding areas. The pain may range from dull and achy to sharp and stabbing, and it can be localised to specific areas or radiate to other parts of the shoulder, arm, or neck.

  • Stiffness or limited range of motion in the affected shoulder.

  • Weakness in the shoulder muscles, affecting the ability to perform tasks that require strength or endurance, such as lifting heavy objects or carrying groceries.

  • Swelling or puffiness, contributing to feelings of discomfort and reduced mobility.

  • Instability or looseness in the shoulder joint, accompanied by feelings of "slipping" or "catching" in the shoulder when moving the arm.

  • Clicking, popping, or grinding sensations in the shoulder joint when moving the arm.

  • Numbness tingling, or pins-and-needles sensations in the shoulder, arm, or hand due to nerve compression or irritation.

The presence and severity of these symptoms can vary widely among individuals so proper diagnosis is essential for determining the underlying cause of shoulder pain and developing an appropriate treatment plan.

Causes These are just some of many possible causes of shoulder pain:

  • Tears, strains, or inflammation of the muscles and tendons that serve to stabilise the shoulder joint.

  • Compression or pinching of the rotator cuff tendons between the bones of the shoulder.

  • Degenerative conditions such as osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis.

  • Thickening and tightening of the shoulder joint capsule, leading to stiffness and limited mobility.

  • Displacement or looseness of the shoulder joint, often resulting from traumatic injuries.

  • Breaks in the bones of the shoulder or surrounding structures due to falls, accidents, or sports injuries.

  • Inflammation of the fluid-filled sacs that cushion the shoulder joint, or tendons in the shoulder (tendinitis), commonly caused by overuse or repetitive movements.

  • Pain originating from other areas of the body, such as the neck, spine, or chest, that radiates to the shoulder.
